Confessions of A Bursary Student

Many may think that being a scholar is actually something to be proud of. And yes, I can't deny that it gives you a teeny bit of victorious feeling when you get to know that hey! I'm a scholar! I'm not sure if bursary students can be considered as scholars but our lecturers regard us as scholars so scholar it is!

I previously took A-Levels at Sunway College as a March intake student but when the bursary offer came along somewhere in between my course, I've made a big decision - to defer to July intake. I'm not quite sure what the main factor of me deferring was, but it was due to a few reasons. I found it not very easy (not exactly very hard, but not easy) to cope in the March intake classes because the teachers can finish one chapter in merely two days! (For now, my lecturers teach at a more human-like pace. *peace!*) Secondly, I wanna make more friends! Somehow I just couldn't click with my March intake classmates for reasons that I don't even know of. Maybe we're just on different wavelengths. I was pretty down in class because I could only talk to Xin Er and Harue. These two factors attracted me into deferring to July intake and so I went to the information centre and got my necessary forms filled up!

CLARIFICATION : Please do not misunderstand. Bursary students and normal students do mix with one another, it just depends on whether you want to or not. And the normal students do get the same lecturers as we do too! The college is not biased. Many people have asked me the same thing, so I thought I should insert it here. Thank you.

I have to thank KPM for offering me the bursary scheme because without it, I wouldn't even be able to experience this new learning environment. When I say new, I really mean totally new and strange. The differences between the March intake and July intake classes were so vast that I had a great shock of my life. I have never felt so pressurised before, not even a day before I sat for my first SPM paper. I don't know how this new experience is for the other bursary students, regardless of whether they're from my college or the other respective colleges, but for me, it was fuuuh! Mind-blowing! How can I put it. Let me give you an example. It's very competitive among my classmates or rather, among the whole of A-Levels, mainly among the bursary students. Not all of the students who were qualified for the bursary offer deferred to July intake though, some of them remained in either January or March intake. And they're super clever as well! T_T Anyway, ya, it's super competitive. Everyone's score is very close to one another's. In fact, the average mark of our class's first Math test was 27/30! Is that crazy or what? One of my classmates exclaimed after our second Math test, "If I don't get 28/30 imma kill myself!" *strangles him* D:

Classmates! + Mr. Randall behind. :P This was taken in the Physics Lab btw.

Everyone speak in intelligent languages, well, for my case, not really. :/ You can know that they're somewhat clever from the way they speak! I'm a relatively shy person, so I thought, I can't let myself be like this anymore. I have to start socialising! And again, thanks to KPM because I got to socialise more! The main reason is because we got to stay in Sunway Monash Residence (which is a very wonderful place with great facilities!) throughout our A-Levels course in Sunway College. Imagine all the bursary students staying in the same building, there has got to be some mingling around hasn't it! ;)

Besides, I took the effort to try to enter ALSCO, which stands for A-Levels Student Council. I have always admired the Alsco members for their socialising skills ever since I was in the March intake! But I knew then that if I were to be a member of the student council, I would have to sacrifice my time and stay back for meetings. Too bad I stayed far away from the college so it would be troublesome (and dangerous!) for my mum to fetch me from college late at night. So I decided to pass! However, since I have a room in SMR now, I don't have to trouble my parents anymore! I didn't hesitate to fill up the application form and lucky enough, I was selected for the interview and am now a member! Before the interview, all of the applicants had to organise an A-Levels event and from there, the seniors and coordinator will evaluate us. My group organised a game event, called Last One Standing. For me, it was considered successful as we had only 2 days to prepare for it although we made very little profit. (Another reason was because our costs were too high!) Anyway it was a fun and memorable experience!

My ALSCO probational group! :)

The interview was pretty scary though, because the seniors had these masks on that resembled tigers. Okay, I'm exaggerating it. Haha. They were really strict during the interview but when they came out of the interview room, their smiles were back on their faces! They're actually very friendly. :) Oh we call them seniors but actually they're the same age as us. Haha because they had 6 months of experience in Alsco already that's why. :P I gained many good buddies through Alsco! I've not only made friends with bursary students from other classes but also non-bursary students who are super friendly and nice! Although it's only my first week being an official ALSCO member, the probational period taught me many things. I'm very grateful for that. Thank you! Oh gawd, I can go on babbling about this. :P

*edited : I've now retired from ALSCO and I must say that I've not regretted even a bit! How I wish I don't all the AS and A2 exams so that I can join ALSCO again...Oh ya btw, joining ALSCO is only for one semester (which is about 6 months) and you'll retire after that to let the juniors replace you because they want you to focus on your studies.

A big HI from ALSCO July '12 team! :D All of us were wearing our specially designed varsity jackets!

Ohhh the fun times....

Back to the stressful part, not only my classmates are competitive, another thing that accumulated my stress is the assignment! Sunway College put very high hopes on us and thus, we were drilled with lots and lots of assignments! Actually I think we're being trained to be robots. Or rather super machines. :/ Haha. But still I don't feel any smarter lah! XD And also because of all these, I have emotional breakdowns more often than before and I hate myself for this! :( I know I've hurt many people around me, especially the ones I love. I throw tantrums, I show black face and I remain silent whenever I'm with them. I'm so sorry. :( I think I still need some time to cope with this stress. T_T

I shall end this blog post soon. But before that, I want to thank KPM again! Let's hope I'll have a brighter future after this and become smarter. I don't want to be called stupid again. T_T T_T And thanks to all my lovelies who will always be by my side during my tough journey with A-Levels! :D Love you guys! <3 br="" nbsp="">

  2. Hi, I'm going to be a bursary student in Sunway too this year. I was wondering how is your hostel life there? Can you share your experience? Thank you thank you~~

    1. Oh hostel life for Sunway students is perfect! Especially if you're under Bursary. Because you'll be provided with the best accomodations ever. I'm currently staying in Sunway Monash Residence and if you choose to walk to college every morning, you can take the Skywalk which will only take you around 15 mins. (depends on how fast you walk! :P) You can also choose to take the bus which comes at every 15 mins specially for SMR residents! :D How cool is that? SMR is a very new place, so no worries about your room being dirty and old. Hope you'll enjoy your time in Sunway College! ^^

    2. I hope so too~ I'm really looking forward to it!!! My parents are kinda worried abt food n safety. Just a curious thought, do they REALLY provide a fridge in your room??? It's a bit unbelievable XD Then it would really really be the BEST accomodation ever haha... Nice to meet you, thanks a lot ^^

    3. The original room has a fridge and a TV I think but they removed them for the bursary students... :(

  3. I heard that there's a separate class for bursary students at Sunway for the July intake. Are the lecturers any different from those in the January/March intake. Are the lecturers really more experienced and teach at a reasonable rate? Does the July class consist of bursary students and non-bursary students? Thanks for sharing your info. Cheers!

    1. No, they are the same lecturers. My lecturers do teach our intakes as well. :) As for the separate classes for bursary students, I'm not sure how the management will plan it to be for the 2nd batch of bursary students but for my batch, yes.

  4. Hi, I am a Bursary scholar for this year and I am currently in a big BIG dilemma. I am deciding between Matriks and A-Levels ( in Sunway ). I want to go for A-Levels because I want to study abroad but the problem is, I feel insecure because KPM only sponsors us until pre-u, but not to degree. Where should I go after A-Levels if I didn't get offered by the top 10 universities in the world? And I don't really want to go for Matriks, it's such a waste right?
Please give me some words of advice, dear senior. :(
I will appreciate it very very much !

    1. Ms Yap, if you don't mind me explaining to Yee Hui, for bursary students who score a minimum CGPA of 3.5 for A-level final exam, JPA will provide scholarship to Top 50 unis in the world provided you are offered a place by the uni.

      Delete
    2. Hello Ms Tan ! Thanks for explaining :)
But... The top 50 universities are for non-critical courses like engineering and accounting. I wish to study Pharmacy, which is a critical course. JPA has stated very clearly, for critical courses like Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry, we have only 10 choices, which is top 10 universities in the world.
Correct me if I am wrong :)

      Delete
    3. Yee Hui, you're right. If I'm not mistaken, the local STPM, Matrikulasi and Asasi may lead to a Pharmacy degree in a local U but I'm not sure if it's applicable to non-bumis. S'pore might offer undergrad degree in Pharmacy if STPM results are exceptional.

      Delete
    4. I understand your situation. :) I personally think choosing A Levels is more secure as it is more widely recognised. If it so happens that you don't get any offers from any of the top 10 universities, you can opt for local private universities as well if it is affordable for you! ^^

  6. Hi,I am a bursarian for this year too.Can I ask about your reasons in choosing Sunway but not Taylor? As I heard from my seniors, they said that Taylor has better reputation and also a lot of links with UK universities. But I also heard that there are too many students in Taylor so they hired temporary lecturer to teach.I am now in conflict, wondering whether Taylor or Sunway would be a better choice. Hope you can give me some opinions. Thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, I can't judge which college is better. But the reasons why I chose Sunway is mainly because of the environment there. It is not as congested as it is around Taylor's and Sunway College gives me a campus feeling. Another reason why I ruled out Taylor's is because there are way too many students there. I prefer classes with not so many students in it so that my lecturers have the chance to attend to me personally sometimes. My class now has 23 students, which is perfect for me. However, opinions differ between individuals so many your choice wisely. :)

  8. Hello senior. I'm going to study A-levels in Sunway College with KPM bursary soon. Now I'm contemplating between 18 months and 24 months programme. From your personal experience, is 18 months programme sufficient to achieve an excellent results provided that we work hard enough of course? Will it be too difficult and stressful to juggle between academic and extra curricular activities? Do you regret for choosing 18 months programme?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmm nope I do not regret choosing the 18 months programme because for the first batch (which is my batch) Sunway College didn't provide a 24-month programme anyway. Haha. Well, it's tough to say if it is sufficient or not because It really depends on individuals. We have seniors who manage to score all A* despite choosing the 18-month one. But going for the 24-month one definitely will help you to even out the stress from both academic and co-curricular activities! :P Some people would think it's too long too. So it depends on you in the end. :)

  12. Hi Cheryl senior ! I am this year KPM Bursary student and I am actually deciding between Taylor's and Sunway. As you mentioned before, you can't really judge which college is better, so I won't be asking you which college is better :D

My question is, does Sunway have a good track record in sending the students to overseas universities? And in Sunway, we will be having a great social life ( correct me if I am wrong :p ), will it affects your studies?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! Thanks for dropping by! :)

Yes! There were students who managed to get into top universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, etc. The lecturers are very helpful as well! They're dedicated in guiding their students to write personal statements, references and so on.

Hmmm I personally don't think social life will affect your studies very much if you know how to manage your time well! It all boils down to how disciplined you are. :)

      Delete
    2. Cambrige, Oxford, Harvard? Hmm, that seems to be quite impossible for normal students like me. Those universities need Xtraordinary students !

As far as I know, Taylor's actually had a talk by the staffs of university placement centre for last year Bursary students and other sponsored students. Does Sunway have it for you guys? I would like to be a Sunwayian but I feel insecure when it comes to overseas university placement :(
Taylor's seems to have more experience D:

    3. Well it's not 100% impossible though. Hehe. Yeah, we had a talk by the staffs of university placement office too! So don't worry. Sunway College knows what's best for us. :)

  13. Dear Cheryl, I'm undecided whether to take Further Maths or Bio. I intend to study Mechanical Engineering. Based on your experience, or your course mates' experience, do you think Further Maths is a difficult subject?
From your photos, I notice that there is a microwave oven in the kitchen. Are we allowed to bring our own rice cookers and induction cookers?
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm during your orientation, you can consult the respective lecturers for Further Math and Biology if you are still unsure. I'm sure they have some useful advice for you! :)

A few of my friends are taking Further Math now and all of them seem okay! Although it cannot be denied that it's a tough subject! Just.. the usual thing. Practice makes perfect! They always do past year papers together so I guess that helps!

We're allowed to bring rice cookers but not induction cookers! Induction cookers will be confiscated if the management sees them because they occasionally do spot checks! D:

What should I bring that is not available in the dorm? Do I need a pail, broom/mop,etc?
Where do you do your laundry? Does Sunway Monash Residence have a a coin-operated washing machine? Is there space for drying clothes? Do we need to bring our own pillow?
Sorry for all the trivial questions but I hope you'll find time to answer them. Thanks.

  17. Hello! I'm glad you chose Sunway College. ^^

Yes, you do need a pail, broom, mop, pillow, bolster (if it's necessary), comforter, bed sheet, toilet paper, etc. Yes, there are coin-operated washing machines at the Laundrette beside the swimming pool. They have dryers as well. If you need to do some washing in your unit, there is a balcony for you to hang your clothes. However, you need to bring your own hangers.

Hope I've cleared your doubts! :)

    3. Yes I suppose you need coins for the laundry service. I've never used it before though. :/ As for the printing service, if you do it in college, the machine to reload your student card only accepts RM5 and RM10 notes. You'll be briefed on this during the library tour. :)

    1. Errr I can't say it's easy but I can't say it's difficult either! Just try to speak more during meetings and try to make yourself sort of "visible" to the seniors so that they will notice you and your strengths. :) From this year onwards our college has a different system for A Levels Student Council so you will be briefed on that during the orientation! It won't be exactly the same as the ALSCO I was in. For my batch, everyone in the council has a specific position but as the system has changed, things would be different. :)

How do you dry your clothes after washing it?
Do you bring your own clothes horse to hang and dry your clothes?
    Is the clothes horse provided?

    1. Hello! I bring my clothes home to be washed because I live nearby so I don't have a problem with drying my clothes. However, if you use the laundry service, they dry them for you using the dryer. If you wash them on your own, yes you have to bring your own clothes horse because it's not provided. :)

      Delete
    2. It depends on what subject combination you choose. Like for me, I'm a pure Science student so my classmates for all my subjects are the same. For my friends who are taking let's say Physics, Econs, Math and Chemistry, they have different classmates.

      Delete
    3. I'm not going to drop any subjects because I personally think it's too risky. I think you should consult your lecturers or your mentor for advice. :)

  26. Why does taking Maths, Phy, Chem and Econs get u different classmates for each subject, while if u take Bio as ur fourth subject u would get the same classmates for all subjects? Well that's what you are saying right? I don't understand, how come?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because more people choose Pure Science. Only a few people choose combinations like that so if they don't mix, their classes would only consist of very few people.

  27. For ur batch, the bursary and private students don't actually mix together even though they are all from the same intake? Why is that even so? Do bursary students get better lecturers or something? That would seem unfair

    1. As I've said earlier, ALSCO would be different for you guys this time. For my batch, there wasn't ALSTAR. ALSTAR's purpose is to get as many students' involvement as possible, so that everyone gets to do something unlike ALSCO, where only 20+ people get to organise events.

It seems that this bursary only sponsors us for the pre U programme? Like really just that?
Do we get kicked for having bad results or so?

and do they send bursary student oversea?
Im interested in pursuing my study in engineering, so will they sponsor us to oversea?
    Thanksss :3

    1. Hello! Yes KPM only sponsors students for Pre-U under the bursary scheme. After that if you want to apply for JPA, you have to apply to the universities under JPA's recognition and JPA will sponsor you if you get into those universities. Of course JPA sponsors students pursuing Engineering! :) My friends have gone to the UK and Australia studying this course. Well I suppose you won't get kicked out if you get bad results! I've never heard of such cases unless you behave really badly in college or something... O.o

For my batch, they do provide scholarships for students pursuing Engineering courses overseas but I'm not so sure how it works for the new batch of students. The policy might have changed. If you have interest in it, there is no harm taking up an extra subject but if you think you cannot cope with a fifth subject, then don't. 34. Hi cheryl, i'm having dilemma in choosing taylor's or sunway for a levels :( do u have friends who studied in taylor's and what were their feedbacks? what do u mean by it is not so crowded in sunway as i know the uni students are in the same campus? or u mean the students in the class is lesser (<30)? The accommodation provided by sunway is really good but as i know we can't cook in the unit, so it is quite inconvenient as the hostel is quite far away from the shops, how do u solve this problem? thanks :D

    1. Hi, I have not studied in Taylor's before so I can't really compare. I personally love Sunway a lot because my lecturers were really very dedicated. My friends who studied in Taylor's mostly just complained about their accommodation, so far I've not heard anything about the lecturers there so I don't really know. For my batch, there were not so many students in one class (mine had around 20++) so I really liked it but for the batches after that, more and more people chose Sunway so the number of students per class had increased quite significantly. As for the food issue, I didn't cook at all. I always took away food or ate dinner at the restaurants near the campus before heading back to my hostel. :)

  35. Hello Cheryl I am a bit confused with the bursary offered by KPM. I am offered the bursary as all 9A+ students are but my question is do I get the scholarship straight away without any interviews or tests? I want to do A-levels in Taylor's University, will I get the bursary automatically if I apply to the university and I have the offer letter or do I have to go through selections tests and interviews before I am given the scholarship? I will be very grateful if you could clarify this. Thank you.

    1. For my batch, we had to get accepted into the top universities listed in a list that JPA provided us and as long as we get accepted, we will be granted the scholarship by JPA automatically (provided you meet JPA's requirements for your A Levels results). However, I heard that for the new batch, you'll have to go through interviews before getting the scholarship but I'm not too sure about this, I'm sorry. :(

    3. If a bursary student could not secure a place in top uni overseas, he is still eligible for scholarship to selected local and private uni. There are conditions to the grades in A levels achieved though.

  37. Hi Cheryl :) U said u are a pure science student that means u take phy, chem, bio and maths? How are the lecturers for these 4 subjects? Will the lecturers be the same with urs for this year july intake(bursary student)? Or they are a few lecturers for the same subject? Btw, i heard that there are many eca clubs that are not active in sunway college, is this true? Cuz i'm going to take one of the top 3 degree courses after a levels and eca is quite important. Thanks for ur info in advance :D
